A kid carrying a baggie of puppy chow becomes the king of the playground. I was probably in the 4th or 5th grade when I tried puppy chow for the first time and this powdery snack will always be a source of nostalgia for me. Messy fingers and simpler times….
Apparently, this recipe was birthed out of the Midwest (what great snacks aren’t?) but they’ve proven themselves to be a nationwide phenomenon as proven by my melting pot of co-workers geeking out over them when I brought them in.
I never took a crack at this recipe until today but I am so glad I did because now I can get my hands on a super easy, super tasty snack in less than 10 minutes.

Vegan Puppy Chow | Vegan Muddy Buddies Recipe
Vegan Puppy Chow | Muddy Buddies (kid-friendly)
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 1 box of Puffins cereal from Trader Joe's
- 1 tbsp Earth Balance
- 12 oz chocolate chips
- 1/2-1 1/2 cup powdered sugar (depending on preference)
- 1-2 gallon ziplock bags
Place the puffins in a large mixing bowl or two medium sized mixing bowls and set aside.
Melt chocolate chips and peanut butter together over low heat and add 1 tbsp of Earth Balance. Stir constantly until everything is smooth. Reduce heat and/or add more butter if chocolate starts to stick to the pan.
Pour melted chocolate and peanut butter over cereal and mix thoroughly.
Powdered sugar application:
Transfer the cereal into a gallon ziplock bag 2-3 cups at a time, add powdered sugar, seal ziplock bag and shake until desired powdered sugar coverage.
Transfer muddy buddies to a bowl and serve room temperature or chilled.
